Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Milwaukee public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Traffic calming and congestion trade-offs
Federal grant money will fund safety design on Burleigh and Holton — protected bikeways, raised crosswalks, street trees. Some alders pushed back on congestion from past projects; DPW says crash and speed data show safety gains and is reviewing trouble spots like Van Buren/Ogden.
I-794 future
Ald. Dimitrijevic questioned why the mayor shifted from supporting removal of the I-794 ramp to a middle-ground position, saying she saw no broad community outreach. The chief of staff said the decision followed years of data gathering, resident and business input, and DOT consultation.
MARK Rail — passenger rail between Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha
A new regional rail commission is working to restore passenger rail along the lakefront between Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha, connecting to Metra's Chicago line. The study is done, but the project is waiting on the federal Corridor ID program to open a new funding window.
Heavy truck restrictions on South 51st Street
Semi-trucks have been using the KK River Parkway — even the grass — to turn around, disrupting the neighborhood. The traffic ordinance adds a 3-ton truck restriction and parking limits south of Fillmore Drive.
Reed Street Yards TID amendment and streetcar tension
The $17.2 million amendment extends a very successful TID for infrastructure and a parking structure study, but Ald. Bauman questioned whether spending it now forecloses using TIF for future streetcar expansion.
Brady Street traffic calming cost sharing
The Brady Street Business Improvement District will pay the special assessments for three raised crosswalks and six traffic islands on E. Brady Street, so property owners there won't be billed.
North side infrastructure from expiring TIDs
Three TID amendments would pour roughly $9 million into repaving, speed humps, raised crosswalks near a school, new street lights, and a playground tied to the MMSD West Basin stormwater project before those districts expire.
Reimagining WIS 175 (Stadium Freeway) corridor study
The final study of the 1.8-mile Stadium Freeway stub identifies four alternatives — none chosen — that could reconnect neighborhoods cut off by the freeway and free up to 37 acres near Washington Park for housing. The next phase would cost $10–14 million and isn't funded yet.
Fond du Lac Avenue corridor condition
Alderwoman Taylor pressed for a rebuild of the whole Fond du Lac corridor, citing daily complaints about potholes north of the project area. Staff said 19th-to-Capitol reconstruction is programmed; Capitol to 68th is resurfacing only for now.
Traffic safety and calming at Water and Pittsburgh
Residents flagged dangerous conditions at the Pittsburgh/Water intersection and asked why no traffic study accompanied 200 new units. DPW said the project doesn't generate enough traffic to require one, and noted a protected bike lane and traffic-calming projects are planned.
Habitual Parking Violator enforcement results
Since November, the city has towed 2,190 vehicles with five or more overdue tickets and collected about $1 million in citations, much of it from drivers paying proactively. The money is new revenue for the cash-strapped transportation fund, though alders want proof the ordinance is changing behavior, not just collecting cash.
